Hydration Shot with Aloe Vera
If you’re planning on heading out tonight for some socializing (and any amount of drinking), take note of this easy recipe for tomorrow morning! It can be hard to rehydrate after a night out with friends, or a particularly rowdy concert experience. I find that living at a higher elevation makes it seem nearly impossible to feel hydrated after just a beer or two, so I came up with this tonic to drink when I’m feeling particularly thirsty. Other than drinking-related dehydration, this is great for after a long bike ride or a day of hiking.
With this tonic, you get about three times more hydration than a single glass of water. Coconut water is full of electrolytes, but the addition of aloe vera juice is what really sets this shot apart.
Aloe vera helps with alkalinity in the body, much like a leafy green. The main reason we have it in this shot is for hydration. The aloe plant is very water-dense, so it’s an ideal way to prevent or treat dehydration. Staying hydrated helps your body detox by providing a way for you to purge and flush out impurities. Recovery from heavy exercise also requires rehydration in order to flush and rid itself of the lactic acid buildup from exercising.
A bonus feature of aloe vera is that it is such a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins and hydration that it can help protect your skin by neutralizing the effects of ultraviolet radiation, repair your skin from existing UV damage, and help prevent fine lines and wrinkles. For you vegans out there, aloe vera is one of the only plant sources of vitamin B-12 too. Consider adding it into your daily diet because of this!
Here’s how to make it ::
- ¼ cup aloe vera juice
- 1 cup coconut water
- Juice of ½ lime
- 1 tbsp honey
- Blend and enjoy!
